Descripción:
In this book, Philip Kaplan focuses on those who fought the longest and fiercest campaign of World War II: the crews of RAF Bomber Command and their comrades of the US Eighth Army Air Force. He draws upon interviews with the participants to create a record of their day-to-day experience of war which is illustrated with photographs, documents and memorabilia that combine to give his readers a unique insight into wartime life. The book looks back to the First World War and the men who pioneered the bomber as a weapon of war, and forward to Korea, Vietnam and the Stealth aircraft used in the Gulf and Kosovo, also including testimony from those who flew for the Luftwaffe and the Japanese and Italian air forces. But the main focus is upon the bombing campaign against Germany from its earliest days, when the bombers carried only ‘bumpf’ ( propaganda leaflets aimed at the German population ( to the ‘round the clock’ bombing that brought death and destruction to Berlin, Hamburg, Dresden and other cities. Bombers is a record of a campaign which, in proportion to the numbers involved, cost more in casualties than any other and a unique tribute to men who almost universally hated their job but did it nonetheless, night after night, day after day, because they believed it was their duty.
